Welcome to the "Urban Transformations: Public and Private Practices of Social Change" Conference Website


It is with great pleasure that the Graduate Leadership Council invites you to participate in American University’s "Urban Transformations: Public and Private Practices for Social Change." is a one-day conference scheduled for March 21st 2009. We are currently calling for presentation proposals, papers, posters, films and alternative research forms from now until February 28th 2009. You will find the conference themes listed below.

Urban Transformations is an interdisciplinary conference intended to bring faculty, students, and all agents of change from around the country into a critical discussion of the state of local, national and international cities. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research on panels with active and engaging audiences.


The conference themes are:

  1. Gentrification and Urban Renewal

  2. Public and Private Governance
  3. Language, Sexuality & Citizenship
  4. Public Health and Environmental Justice

The worldwide economic and development crises we are currently facing will significantly impact the everyday experiences of city life and governance.
